Character Name: Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito
Character Canon: The World Ends With You
History: Wiki link!
When we are first introduced to Beat, it is in the first week of the Reaper's Game - a survival-of-the-fittest test of the imagination for dead kids with the prize of a second chance at life. Beat had died while trying to rescue his sister Rhyme from a car that was speeding toward them, only to wake up in the Game and find her there: as another Player, without any memory of him. She was lamenting her lack of a dream and about to give up on coming back to life without ever having tried, so Beat became her partner and made up a lie about wanting to become the world's great skateboarder in order to inspire and motivate her. Together they set out to win the Reaper's Game, though on the first day they were detained from completing the first mission when a Reaper named Uzuki ambushed them.
Upon meeting Neku and Shiki, Rhyme tried to help them out by giving them pins and teaching them how to use their phones for the game, but Neku reacted incredibly coldly to the notion of teaming up with them. This made Beat rather ticked off at him, and so he and Rhyme worked by themselves instead - though they kept crossing paths with the other team. By the fourth day, they finally were able to hang out as a group. Darkness loomed ahead, however. Using an easy mission as bait, Uzuki and Kariya lured Beat into a trap, and Rhyme had to push him out of the way of a shark Noise. Much like their initial death, Rhyme ended up getting erased, with Beat's life soon to follow due to the conditions of the game pacts. He was rescued by the game's Producer, Sanae Hanekoma, who took him to his coffee shop while Neku and Shiki finished off the Noise. Hanekoma transformed Rhyme's soul into a pin so that Beat could pact with it, but he still had no way to fight so he was supposed to stay in the safety of the shop. Instead, Beat took a huge risk and sought out the two Reapers from before to ask them how to use the pin. They reminded him that they could erase him at any moment, but must have decided to be helpful, as when the boss was defeated and victory was nigh, Beat asked to join the Reapers, to the shock of his former friends. His request was granted, and that was the end of week 1.
During Week 2, he used his brand new Reaper abilities to summon Rhyme's soul in the form of a flying squirrel Noise. He was given the order to erase Neku and his partner, and so what little we saw of him, he was attacking, each time with full force. However, the first time he backed off in the middle because they were 'too weak.' Another time, he dropped Rhyme's necklace that he had bought for her. Neku tried to return it in the middle of another of their fights, and he ended up taking it and storming off. In the end he didn't complete that mission, and so his second week was mostly fruitless.
At the beginning of the third week, all of the other Players were taken as Neku's entry fee, in a trap by the Conductor to ensure his victory. Beat, fed up with the Reapers' underhanded tactics, formed an illegal pact with Neku and betrayed the Reapers to become his partner, and in so doing revealed that he had always hated the way they did things. That week's Game Master, Konishi, then took Rhyme's pin hostage as his entry fee, informing him that he was demoted to Player and because he'd failed to gain any 'points' in week 2, he would disappear from existence in a matter of days. She challenged them to a game of hide and seek, and concealed herself inside of Beat's shadow so they wouldn't be able find her. However, he was determined to prevail, not only to beat Konishi's game but to overthrow the Composer so that he wouldn't disappear and could rescue Rhyme. They spent that week interacting with the Reapers, many of whom gave them keypins to enter forbidden areas as they searched (frantically in Beat's case) for Konishi. They also found that things were seriously off in Shibuya, as when they scanned people to read their minds, everyone was thinking just one identical phrase. Beat assumed that the nefarious doings, and the identity of the Composer, were all of the artist CAT, since the pins using his designs were the cause of the mind control. Neku informed Beat that Hanekoma is CAT, to Beat's surprise, but he insisted that Hanekoma must be the Composer then. The matter was not resolved at that point.
Even the Reapers were affected by the O-Pins, and they began attacking them relentlessly under the effects of mind control, forcing Beat and Neku to erase them. Uzuki and Kariya were likewise affected, but Beat stopped Neku from finishing them off, returning their mercy from before and saying they aren't bad people.
During all of this, Beat came across a memorial that was set up for he and Rhyme, and revealed to Neku that he came from a somewhat troubled home life; always fighting with his parents over grades, the only support he got was from his sister. However, this too began to frustrate him, as he felt that she pitied him. He became distant from Rhyme until the day when he ran away from home after a fight, leading to both of their deaths by a speeding car. Neku gave him a pretty encouraging speech about not letting others hold him back, going the distance and not living with regret.
They later found that Hanekoma's coffee shop, WildKat, had been ransacked, and were uncertain what that meant for their theories. However, using Joshua's phone (which can snap pictures of the past), they found an image of Hanekoma hiding something in the shop. When they checked the hiding place, they found a letter and the keypin to the Shibuya River, where the Composer resides. However, before they could investigate the area, they crossed paths with Sho Minamimoto, who was the ransacker. They fought him, but he ended up taking off in the middle of it, apparently having gotten what he wanted.
The final day, Beat was beginning to fade away, so they hurried to the River and found that the wall was smashed open by Minamimoto. They ventured inside and received a mysterious text message informing them of Konishi's weaknesses (it all but told them she was hiding in Beat's shadow too, but they didn't notice.) Anyway, they caught up with Minamimoto again, and he pointed it out for them because Konishi was blocking him with a barrier. Konishi struck a deal with Minamimoto and let him through, then attacked Beat and Neku. They grabbed Rhyme's pin from her during the fight, and used its power to finish her off. As she was fading, she taunted Beat, implying that even if he brought Rhyme back, she wouldn't love him since that was HIS entry fee. Hers was something else, so he must not have been very dear to her in the first place. He decided to ignore that for the time being and pressed on with Neku.
Since Konishi was defeated, Shiki appeared with them in the Trail of the Bygone, as she was part of Neku's entry fee that was then returned. They also found Minamimoto's body, ironically crushed beneath a pile. Beat thinks they're lucky they don't have to fight him.
They proceeded to the Dead God's Pad, where the Conductor, Kitaniji, was waiting for them. He attacked them, seizing control of Shiki's mind and using her as another weapon. Beat begged for forgiveness as he was about to erase her, but Neku shouted at him to stop... just as she fired a killing blow toward him, which Beat leapt in front of. Both of them were knocked out cold, leaving Neku to journey on alone. Basically all they miss is Kitaniji's speech, explaining his motives to Neku. He was unable to brainwash him, however, and Beat and Shiki arrived in time to help defeat him. Then Joshua came back, and began taunting Kitaniji - determined to win, he then took all three of Neku's partners hostage in an even bigger boss fight. Neku defeated that as well, and Joshua proclaimed his victory......Which means he could erase Shibuya then. Joshua used Shiki and Beat to prove to Neku that he was the Composer, explained everything behind the scenes that happened, and challenged Neku to one more game: a duel with guns. Neku was unable to shoot, so he lost
Despite all this, Joshua revived everyone and left the city be. Beat, Rhyme, Neku and Shiki all met up at Hachiko and became friends in real life.
AU History: (This is required for all characters to integrate them into the setting. It can be reasonably simple, or it can be more complex. You may integrate other characters into your history with their permission.)
Canon Personality: Beat is a skater kid/tough guy/street-talker with a loud mouth and a great big heart. He is very much a feeler, and very much not a thinker. Beat's temper is like a bull's, in that he'll yell and charge with only a little provocation. In other words, it's easy to rile him up, though it's somewhat unpredictable because he might not realize he's being made fun of, or on the other hand, he might jump to conclusions over innocuous statements. But the sure-fire way to get him to charge at you is calling him by his full name, "Daisukenojo Bito," instead of his nickname, "Beat." As I understand, the translation of the kanji makes it kind of a flowery, sissy name. He protests this violently, but in fact, he's a big softy deep down and he's not terribly subtle about it. He also tends to be jovial most of the time, as long as no one is pushing his buttons. He is quick to accept offers of friendship and is fairly open about what he's feeling. He's also just as materialistic as the stereotypical teenager, as evidenced by him going out of his way to collect rare fashionable items (both his hat and the necklace he bought for Rhyme are described to be this), and also in the manga, he pokes fun at Neku for having an outdated cellphone.
He can hold a grudge; anyone that was rude to him or those close to him will be remembered and openly disliked, but only up until they make it up to him somehow. This applies to bigger situations too, and that's why even though Kariya and Uzuki erased Rhyme, he doesn't seem to hate them afterwards; because they were also the ones who told him how he could bring her back, when they could have just erased him on the spot for coming up to them. Beat can be thoughtful of others such as including Joshua in the list of people he'd like to save in week 3, even though at the time he didn't even know him beyond the fact that he had been Neku's partner and it was Reaper Beat's job to erase him.
Also, like many TWEWY characters, Beat has a habit of giving people quick, obvious nicknames - for example "Phones" is Neku since he's always wearing headphones, "Lolipop" is Kariya since he always has candy, etc. This is due in part to the fact that most characters in TWEWY have not been introduced, but even after they have, the nicknames stick on long after, so if you want to avoid one, you'd better introduce yourself fast.
Before the beginning of the game's events, Beat was a lazy, delinquent kid without any dreams, fighting with his parents often. Although he loved his sister Rhyme, he hated her pity, and so he pushed her away and was cold and distant. And so he was like Neku in the sense of having small horizons, always seeming to take a step back. However, he began to develop immediately as a result of his and Rhyme's lost entry fees in the game; Beat's was Rhyme's memories of him, showing how much he actually did care for her, and he immediately stopped taking his little sister for granted. Rhyme's was her dreams, which caused their roles to reverse when Beat pretended to have a dream of being the world's greatest skateboarder. In trying to follow her example to show it to her, he took a leadership role for what was probably the first time. Which was a good thing for him! But unfortunately, he is a terrible leader; he just goes full throttle and nobody can keep up with him, plus he's embarrassingly stupid, and Rhyme being erased was basically a result of him not looking where he leapt - she pushed him out of the way of a noise attack because (with her loss of dreams) she thought he had more to live for, and he carried that guilt with him for the rest of the game. He tends to dwell on his mistakes.
Although Beat is a protagonist and has a strong sense of fairness and justice, he's not hesitant to walk on the dark side to reach his goals. When his sister Rhyme is erased, he believes he does not deserve to come back to life without bringing her back with him, and so he joins the Reapers to gain the information on how to go about doing that. Since the condition was "Destroy your former friends," he hopped right to it, attacking Neku with the full force of his newly gained Reaper powers. However, despite pulling no punches in the actual battle, he ultimately quit because they were too weak - showing that he is an honorable person even under these circumstances. He also refused to erase any other players that he wasn't specifically ordered to, even though a Reaper's lifespan is intrinsically dependent on the "points" gained from doing so. This shows that he is kind, but also reinforces what I've been saying all along about him rushing into things without thinking. There's also the fact that he was even willing to shoot for the Composer's chair to bring Rhyme back, which is in stark contrast to his former lack of ambition and distant stance toward her - the Composer is basically Shibuya's God, so you can't get much more ambitious than that. What he learned from the game is not to let anything in life stop him.
As Beat is the type who wears his heart on his sleeve, his relationships with others are fairly straightforward. What you see is what you get. In the game, he made a pleasant acquaintance with Shiki, and had to rebuild his relationship with Rhyme from scratch. However, it was with Neku that he was able to truly change. They both saved each other's lives, after all - Beat saved Neku by turning to his aid when the Reapers tried to rob him of a partner, and Neku motivated Beat when his remaining life was fading and he was about to give up. Neku is the only character that Beat confessed his hard family life to. By the end, Beat saw him as more than just partners - they were friends. Functionally speaking, Neku also somewhat took over Rhyme's previous role of pacifying Beat before he could do anything too crazy, although Rhyme was much better at it.
AU Deviation: (The nature of the AU is such that the character's personal history will be different, be it in simple or dramatic ways. Due to a much different upbringing, we expect there to be at least some variation, even if small. Spend at least one paragraph detailing in what ways the character differs from their canon incarnation.)
Canon Abilities: Prior to and after the Reaper's Game, Beat had no supernatural powers whatsoever. During the game, he had the ability to use psychs, or imagination-based attacks.
As a player, he used a pin called "Respect," which was a shockwave type that he used to reinforce a skateboard into a weapon. He also had the ability to make a pact with another person, which linked their vitalities together and created a shared light puck that strengthened their attacks but had to be passed between each other. He could also gain fusion attacks with that partner by having them play a card game similar to Poker.
An example of his basic gameplay and his first two fusion attacks.
He was a Reaper for a week, which gave him a pair of wings that he could use to fly and a different set of abilities. It also presumably added some Darkness flavor to his attacks, as his shockwaves as a Reaper were purple in color. He had moves such as:
* A combo where he spun in place on his board to kick up a small wave of energy from the ground, which he could chain up to two times.
* Leaping up into the air, then slamming straight down, thus creating a medium-size shockwave in a circle out from him.
* Charging forward at high velocity with an energy barrier around him. (It should be noted that Reaper Beat was damn fast in general, leaving behind afterimages when charging, dashing, jumping, etc.)
* He had the ability to summon and throw a sort of red shuriken, that looked like three crescents back to back. They're huge, about as tall as a character's torso, but slow. He could throw up to four at a time.
* He could also make a sort of shadow copy of himself to fight two people at once. The copy does everything the original does.
For some visuals, watch this LP at about 2:48 on.
He also appeared in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, where he had the ability to summon a Kooma Panda.
Enlightened Abilities: (While your character will not have access to their canon abilities, they will instead gain access to up to two Pokémon types as outlined here: http://www.serebii.net/xy/typechart.shtml
Through these types, they will be able to take on an ability set that can mimic their canon abilities. Additionally, they will gain access to special trainer abilities as detailed here: http://bravenewmods.dreamwidth.org/715.html
While describing this section, a good format would be to describe initial abilities and the way the abilities will develop after the first and second evolutions.
If your character has no canon powers, they may still be an Enlightened. However, we ask that the abilities you choose generally make some sense for the character, whether it's related to personality or other canon considerations.
While complex vehicles are beyond the technology level of Union, characters may, as part of their overall composition, use Enhanced items that have aspects of an available Pokémon. A character may begin with a single Enhanced item, such as a sword that contains the Fire type. This is generally recommended to be similar to something they use in canon.)
Starter Pokémon: (Pick one from the list found here: http://bravenewmods.dreamwidth.org/968.html
If you have the "Far from Ordinary" perk, you may pick two. Starter Pokémon need not share your type. You are not required to pick a starter, you may start with no Pokémon if desired.)
Notes/Special Considerations: If you have special things you want to do with your character that can potentially impact the plot such as giving them an ancient power from a clan thought long extinct, here is the place to put it. It's suggested that you contact the moderators beforehand to hash things out if you want to do anything dramatic. You may also PM or IM one of the moderators beforehand if you wish to get the section pre-approved or ask questions on what is and is not allowed.
SAMPLES
(NOTE: You may link a previous entry or thread, including testrun or musebox threads (but NOT Dear Mun), for one or both samples. However, we want to see the character in the setting of Brave New World and specifically in their AU for at least one sample.)
First-Person: (Also known as “commentspam.” This is from the character’s perspective and helps us determine how well you grasp your character’s voice. The minimum is six sentences. If we deem that there is not enough spoken or written dialogue, we will ask you for more. If you link an outside entry or thread, the minimum is 10 comments from your character in one thread/with one character.)
Third-Person: (This is written in prose from an independent narrator’s perspective. Here we want to see an insight into your character’s unspoken behavior -- actions, thoughts, their view of their world, etc. The minimum here is two paragraphs. If we do not get a good sense of your character’s behavior, we will ask for more. If you link an outside entry or thread, the minimum is 20 comments from your character in two threads/with two characters.)
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie, the purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.
